Perennial, ornamental, herbaceous plant, valued for its culinary and medicinal properties. Fresh and dried leaves are widely used to flavour variety of dishes, including pizzas, pastas. meat, soups, stews etc. One of the main herbs in Italian kitchen. Sets lovely pinkish/purplish flowers and grayish-green leaves, looking very pretty grown on windowsills, balconies, gardens etc. Can be grown hydroponically. Grows 20-80cm (7.87-31.5in) tall. Preffers full sun/partial shade, fertile, light soil and regular watering. Rich in essential oil, it as well contains great amount of health benefiting properties. Can be used for flower bouquets and compositions. Oregano is an excellent companion plant for tomatoes and peppers. Acts as a repelent of aphids and provides ground cover and humidity for peppers if allowed to spread among the plants.
Grow oregano in free-draining soil or compost in a sunny, sheltered spot. Harvest the leaves as and when you need to, cutting the plant back completely every so often to encourage a fresh flush of foliage. If growing in pots, re-pot every couple of years in fresh compost. Prevent water-logging in winter by adding grit to the planting hole. As plant of Mediterranean origin, oregano needs plenty of full sun with good drainage. It does best in free-draining compost in porus pots such as terracotta pots. Oregano suffers in wet soil, so if you’re planting it in the ground and have heavy soil, make sure you include a handful of grit to the planting hole.Keep your oregano in a sunny, sheltered spot and water sparingly throughout the growing season.
Cut plants back completely in midsummer to encourage fresh new leaves. Alternatively let the plants flower to provide nectar and pollen for bees. Plants will die back in winter and regrow from woody stems spring. In spring, it’s a good idea to re-pot pot-grown oregano into fresh compost with added slow-release fertiliser. This is also a good time to cut the woody stems back to the base of the plant to encourage fresh new growth. Oregano is relatively trouble-free to grow, providing plants have the right growing conditions. Its flowers are good for attracting bees and butterflies. It also makes a good companion plant, helping to deter aphids.
Growing: spring, indoors, 6 weeks before the last frost; direct seeding, when soil temp. has reached at least +15C (59F).
Soil: well drained, averagely fertile soil with a pH 6-8.
Sowing depth: sprinkle the seeds on the surface of the soil and barely cover.
Spacing: 12-15in (30-38cm) apart.
Light: full sun.
Watering: regular watering; drought tolerant.
